4Qs: Smartwatch

1. What are the benefits of this technology?

The 2 major benefits are communication and health. It motivates us to improve our physical health and reminds us to take care of our lives. With the applications that provide us data with our sleeping patterns, fitness activities, time spent on the devices enhances our awareness to be active and become healthy. People are amazed whenever they see progress in their status reports. In our modern age, this is great for mankind especially for those who often stay at home or forget to go out and do running, hiking, biking, or swimming.

Going out sending and receiving messages or even calling is now feasible and convenient even without a phone. You can still communicate with your friends during a workout. The ability to detect a hard fall and notifying the emergency services is impressive.

    2. What might be the problematic aspects of this technology?

It is a probability for some people to depend on a smartwatch just to take care of themselves. It might be a stretch but it is just a possibility. Another one is it might distract during office hours.

    3. How God might redeem this technology for us as Christians?

One has a sense of protection through its "Fall Detection"1 feature while running or hiking. Talking with someone wherever you go and whatever you do is feasible. It is more convenient than carrying and holding your phone just to speak or connect with someone. You can't bring your phone while swimming for it is not waterproof. I can also definitely ask for guidance and directions through GPS "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death" - Ps. 23 (ESV).

Those 3 things mention above: call for protection, talking with someone, and asking for direction are all possible wherever and whenever through the Holy Spirit.

Humanity is limited when it comes to protection but the Spirit is unlimited. People talking with one another can't know each other's thoughts but the Spirit fully comprehends your thoughts "before a word is on [your] tongue.. [he knows] it completely." - Ps.139. Any man-made GPS device only shows the direction in the material world but the Spirit covers the entire spectrum of both heavenly and earthly realms.

    4. What is my conclusion of the overall value of this technology?

I imagined myself having this kind of watch while doing my regular run outside last week. I pretended to be talking with someone. Wearing this gadget can allow me to reach out for someone to pray or encouragement while I run or swim. It can be with me during my entire life because it is just a wearable. The great news is that the Holy Spirit is not just wearable ".. for he dwells with [us] and will be in [us]". - John 14:17
