Identity theft
**Architecture, see footnote 3.
In Bubbletease last week our small group discussed "Identity". People today have a tendency to find their Identity unto temporal things of this world such as but not limited to: relationships, careers, money, power, reputation instead of what the bible says which is in Christ. Going home, driving, and pondering about the theme of "Identity" I asked myself what are the things in my life that serve as my "Identity". I started thinking of my achievements in the past, then later on my skills and talents, and then about the commendations and praises from people.
A clip from Homecoming appeared in my mind where Tony was asking for the suit back from Pete. It is exactly what "Identity" is for most people.
Peter Parker: You don't understand! This is all I have! I'm nothing without this suit!
Tony Stark: If you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it, okay?1
Peter was dependent on his suit. He felt that he can't do anything without it. As if his whole life, and identity were in the suit. He had the heart to serve and save people making the community a better place to live in. But on his view, he cannot be a superhero without that specialized suit.
I wonder if I am the same too, sometimes. Experiment with me. Imagine talking to God using Peter's line in this format. Replace the word "suit" with something else. Here are some of my examples.
"God, You don't understand! This is all I have! I'm nothing without this job!"
"God, You don't understand! This is all I have! I'm nothing without this relationship!"
"God, You don't understand! This is all I have! I'm nothing without this talent!"
"God, You don't understand! This is all I have! I'm nothing without this opportunity!"
"God, You don't understand! This is all I have! I'm nothing without this (Fill in the blank)!"
God's response might be similar exactly to what Tony said.
Son, If you're nothing without this job, then you shouldn't have it, okay?
Son, If you're nothing without this relationship, then you shouldn't have it, okay?
Son, If you're nothing without this (Fill in the blank), then you shouldn't have it, okay?
I then imagine what would God say to re-educate the truth about Christ to his children.
"Son, you are nothing without my beloved son which is Jesus Christ. Only Jesus completes you nothing else. Everything else that you receive is a bonus. All of the accolades, recognition, fame, wealth are worth nothing compared to the glory and the power of the Cross working in and through your life."
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."2
