Four guys and a mic
I invited two of my officemates together with Dino (a.k.a. Bene :-D) to watch the game 1 of the NBA Finals. My intention is to connect with them and somehow build friendship with them. Bene knew the main reason why I planned for that night and why I invited him. To have more friends and widen our network.
The entire night was full of joy, laughter, and insightful conversations. We realized we just literally watched the last 5 mins of the fourth quarter, and paid attention to the last 3 minutes. In my perception, we were all under the impression of just loving the company of each other. Prior to the meet up, I talked to God about how we are to engage and build relationship with them. God didn't just support my request but also provided creative ways to build up the momentum of our camaraderie. I believe in the power of community in regardless of color and background.
The key ingredient on any activity in a team is TRUST. "A team is a group of people who TRUST each other".1 Bene trusted me about the purpose and motivation of the gathering. I trusted him with the logistics of the venue; and his passion for connecting with other people even outside of his personality and ethnicity.
"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms."2 - 1 Peter 4:10
Bene has a significant gift of pinpointing the talent and strength of others (a type of encouragement). "Ito ung dagat mo e.3 (This is your sea)". There are people where I can connect but not him. There are also types of people that he is more effective in connecting with.
He has the leadership skill of inspiring to go and keep on moving forward (More of perhaps similar to an activator). "Kapag sasama siya camp, I-push mo un! I-follow up mo, para makasama.4 (Grab the opportunity, if you see hints that he might going to come or interested. Invite him again to our camp)"5
