This season
People go through different seasons in life. I'm in the season where there are huge and significant concerns that I could pray and consider such as but not limited to: career, finances, marriage, ministry, etc. Recently a person came into my life asking "When do you plan to get settled? What is your goal?". I asked him to clarify the question. I thought he was referring to "settling down" physically in life pertaining to geographic location. Little did I know that it might also mean getting married.
"Your emotion doesn't necessarily [means] it is God's will for you... Be led by the spirit... Don't follow other people's opinion".1
When making decisions to the list above, it is easy just to be led by the advice of others. If we don't fix our attention to what Jesus is saying through the scriptures we can fill our minds based on the principle of others thus setting ourselves to be prone to unbiblical life choices. People's advice is just a combination of these 2 elements in varying degrees: accumulation of life's experiences, and analysis based on acquired principles from other authors or preachers. People's advice might contain nuggets of information that are in accordance with the word of God but if we are to get that advice it will no longer be personal, rather it is a second-hand insight from someone. Nothing beats the personal engagement with Jesus Christ through the meditation and careful reading of the scriptures.
"let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith."2 - Hebrews 12:1-2
Our life is not a sprint but it is more of a race. The key is to look and stay focused on Jesus, no one else. People might be misconstrued in their thinking but Jesus is not. If we don't spend time with Jesus alone on a regular basis we are not being influenced by him thus there's no transformation of the mind that happens as Romans pointed out.
