Judging

Landing in a new city and meeting a new subgroup of people within the community of faith has the possibility to take one's humility to the next level. "But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,"1 - Matthew 6:3
An individual could be tempted to showcase how much he/she gives money to the beggars downtown or even mention every campus missionary that he/she supports if the individual is put into a position where he/she is perceived by people who love him/her the most as someone who is not generous. But broadcasting one's good works would defeat its purpose because it is prone to highlight one's kindness instead of giving God all the glory. Not all the world-renowned philanthropists have genuine intentions.

It is tricky how to teach or impart someone whether older or younger if one does not have a wide array of knowledge on how generosity can be exemplified and not only limited to the financial aspect. "I'm generous in my time"2 a pastor for more than 30 years once preached.
One could easily be influenced by the people that surround him and bend his conviction in a subtle way. His conviction would be reignited if someone influential and scholarly spoke directly and boldly on the pulpit.
If we assess someone who is not being generous don't ask the person explicitly rather evaluate how you define generosity.
