Book Review: Thanking God with Integrity by Willard Metzger

Image
This entry is a tribute to Jomel Dalusong who gave me the book.     The book is about a list of short prayers appropriate for meals. Each prayer has a bible passage that could be meditated upon. The prayers are divided into three sections: Hunger, Emergency Relief, and Creation Care. The book is meant to be read while doing the prayer before the meal. It is not designed to read the book in one sitting.   I like the pictures associated with different types of scriptures towards the end. Some might be intentional. It could also serve as one's devotion for the day. The strength of the book is the creative way of composing the prayers for meals. Whenever I pray for a meal whether individual or communal I tend to say the same things again and again with just different wordings. I never thought of a wide variety of compositions of prayers. The only weakness that I can think of is some prayers are repetitive. The content of the prayer is there and there is...

3 great things driving in EDSA

Image
It's been more than a decade since I last drove in EDSA. For non-Filipinos, the Philippines is known for "no rules in driving" (which I strongly disagree with), and for Filipinos, EDSA is the scariest place to drive (I also disagree).  Proverbs 14:34   “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people.” 1 God is at work in our beloved EDSA. We Filipinos ought to be proud not because of our work but because of God's faithfulness, which is evident in EDSA.  1. Structure (Physical Realm). I realized that there are no buses anymore on the outer lane. There's a designated lane exclusive for the bus. It made my driving smoother and I just had to focus in my lane. Swerving decreased in general. This is a milestone. A great improvement in the overall system of the traffic on the highway. I found it easier to navigate to my path and destination. 2. Staff (Character of the people). I knew I'm not allowed to pass through the double yellow lane but ...

Post-mother's day entry

Aneka says, "You just hung up on the queen." Then Shuri says, "I just hung up on my mom, there's a difference." We can learn the two ways in which Shuri relates to Ramonda: as her mom, and as her queen. There are generally accepted behaviours and norms on how a layman relates to the queen. In a conversation with someone who's higher than a layman, the initiative to end the conversation is usually from the higher authority. It is outrageous if the layman is the one who stops the conversation.      Shuri is aware of her relationship with Ramonda. It is intimate. She broke the barriers and addressed him as her mom. In the midst of chaos and their countrymen were in great danger, they coordinate on how to strategize to defeat the enemy. As a mother, Ramonda is caring and protective because "mothers are the greatest helpers in the world [then] they do things that can't be paid or bought with money." 1      It is evident in the movie how Shuri...

Student loan

Image
Most if not all people in South East Asia immediately step into college right after high school to pursue a degree in their chosen field of interest. The idea of that paradigm is to start the career they would pursue in the long run. One possible disadvantage is that changes in passion and interest might occur during their study or even in the early years of their profession. On the other hand, the paradigm in North America is different. Since the k-12 educational system had been established and the employment opportunities not requiring a degree, not all high school students immediately proceed to college right after graduation. Some take a year off and some continue to work on their jobs as they go up the ladder.     Living in the West can have more freedom with one's decisions in life. Earning a minimum wage though not desirable still would meet one's necessity to survive. In choosing their path, the wage is always the one factor compared to the Philippines. I...
